Dr. Nikia Edwards Ph.D., LPC, CSAC, ACS, NCC  

Clinical Director | Founder | Owner

Dr. Edwards is a native of New Haven, CT. She is an experienced behavioral health treatment provider with over 20 years of helping individuals, couples, and families from all ages and all walks of life. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (VA), a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (VA), an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Virginia Board of Counseling approved clinical supervisor.   She completed her Doctorate of Philosophy in counselor education and supervision from Capella University and her Master’s of Science in counseling from Southern Connecticut State University. Dr. Edwards’s undergraduate studies in psychology were completed at the University of Connecticut. Her years of experience in the counseling and helping fields have afforded opportunity for her to serve as a program director, health educator, clinical supervisor, MFLC, program clinician, substance abuse therapist, case manager, clinical consultant, adjunct professor, victim advocate, private practice owner, professional mentor, mental health and behavioral health coordinator, and clinical director. 

As a clinical behavioral health treatment provider, she is dedicated to and passionate about helping people grow. She enjoys challenging others to go deeper and further beyond their present self. She seeks to understand each client, their needs, and their journey while providing the necessary tools for growth and negotiating life challenges. She values the uniqueness of each individual, each couple, and each family which drives how she delivers treatment and services. Her clinical approach is integrative infusing an abundance of strategies from a variety of therapies, including strength-based approach, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, insight oriented therapy, experiential therapy, person-centered approach, Motivational Interviewing techniques, and Solution-Focused Therapy. She also integrates a faith-based approach for clients who desire to address and incorporate their spiritual journey during the process. The integrative approach to treatment and services with clients allows her to meet her clients where they are along their life journey; and it creates a safe and mutual environment for client work to be done.  

 

Dr. Edwards’s commitment to building the counseling profession is done through her service at the national and local levels as a professional mentor for the National Board of Certified Counselors mentor program.  Additionally, she serves as a volunteer reviewer for the National Board of Certified Counselors Foundation, to include the following: Minority Fellowship Program (MFP), Professional Development Award, Military/Minority/Rural Scholarship Program, and Board Certified Tuition Assistance Scholarship Program.  Dr. Edwards has been invited to provide her counseling experience and expertise as a guest lecturer at South University, Virginia Beach campus and as a retreat presenter, Women’s Self-Care Retreat: Do One Thing Different, for NProgress Consulting, LLC.

 

Her life journey continues here in Newport News, VA raising her three children while providing service and volunteerism to those in need. She is an advocate for growing the counseling profession, client wellness, and community-building. Her work for and with the community is demonstrated through her leadership as a board member for the Live, Love, Paint Foundation, Inc. of Hampton, VA.  She is also a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. where for over two decades she has served the community through her active participation in local and national sorority projects.  Dr. Edwards is a woman of faith who continues to uplift kingdom building through her leadership and service.

 

Dr. Edwards enjoys traveling, gaining knowledge, playing Scrabble, modeling, hosting gatherings with family and friends, bowling, guiding teens and young adults, coordinating events, and line dancing. Seven years ago Dr. Edwards made a "bucket list" which includes her desire to skydive, travel to Africa with her children, parasail, jet ski, hang glide, water ski, relearn to sew, and to live in Africa.  She has six left to explore and accomplish!
